Join professional dancer and choreographer, Gareth Woodward, for this high energy, commercial hip-hop dance workshop. Learn new techniques and amazing routines to the latest tunes. Gareth has worked with some of the biggest names in the business including Cheryl Cole, Coldplay and The X Factor.

An afternoon of conversations and activity, which will provide an insight into artist-led activity in Nottingham. Together, we will consider what the artist-led culture of the city is and how this has changed over recent years; what the term artist-led means now, and how we embody it; and, perhaps most importantly, what it will look like in the future.  This event features a talk by art critics, The White Pube who will describe how and why the collaboration began in 2015 and how it continues to grow.

This event has been organised by UKYA with the New Midland Group, a partnership between Backlit, One Thoresby Street and Primary.

Bored on Mars is a collaboration between artist Chiara Dellerba and dancer Kim Bormann. The workshop, an interactive and intimate performance, explores forms of decompression and engages with the notion of unproductive space, slow down rituals and the creation of nothing as a generative process with critical potential.

Berkavitch is one of the most respected voices in the UK spoken-word scene. Former UK Slam Poetry Champion, Internationally acclaimed Storyteller, accomplished Breakdancer, Digital Artist and Animator, he has toured poetry and spoken-word across Europe, South America and Asia, and his work has been featured on Sky Arts, Radio 1, Radio 1Xtra and Radio 4.

During this two hour workshop participants will explore various approaches for developing semi-autobiographical writing for performance utilising metaphor as a creative device.

Selected artist Sarah Cunningham reflects on her recent artist residency in the remote indigenous community of Armila,  in the Guna Yala region of Panama, with the organisation La Wayaka Current, and Guna Yala Indigenous Province.

Representatives from Arts Council England outline the different streams of funding that artists can apply for, and present an overview of their work and key priorities. Followed by a funding surgery in which you can discuss ideas with fellow artists, and receive advice from experts in arts funding.

In his lecture-performance Apertures, UKYA alumnus Bill Balaskas will explore the ideological agency of contemporary art by expanding his research into the notion of “blindness”. Blurring the boundaries between personal narration, scientific documentation and poetic allegory, Balaskas will bring together a variety of sources and media, in order to further one of the most prominent preoccupations in his artistic and academic practice: the invisibility of the structures of power. Last spring in St. Ives Cornwall, UKYA ran our second ‘Weekender’ residency, curated by Claudio Zecchi in collaboration with Chiara Dellerba and Garth Gratrix. In this performative talk, the curators use the zine as a device to instigate and trigger an immersive and performative discussion, seeking to re-think and re-define the Cornish Weekender atmosphere with the participation of the artists and the public.

This interactive talk will be followed by an open session where you can find out more about the next UKYA Weekender, coming in 2019; applications open shortly after the City Takeover.

PlayWorks ScrapBand is a special one off workshop. Come along and make instruments out of recycling materials. This is a creative session for children, creating homemade instruments from scrap materials and playing music as a group.

Suitable for all ages.

In this workshop Aja Ireland will teach you how to make environmental recordings, and create a wide range of different sounds and textures by only using simple, built in Ableton Plugins. You will learn to build ambient/drone/noise textures, experiment and discovering new sounds as a group through live demonstration.

Get animated with this Stop-motion animation workshop! Working in small groups of 2-4 and learning the techniques used in 'Shaun the Sheep’ and the ‘Lego Movie’ you will create your very own animated movie. You will make models and props and then use cameras, laptops, backgrounds and lots of imagination to bring your creations to life! Your finished films will then be uploaded to the Animation Nation ‘YouTube’ Channel for your family and friends to watch!

Participating artists and tutors from the LandXcapes in Puglia (October 2018) discuss their experiences of this multidisciplinary cultural project of integrated enhancement of the identity and landscape heritage of Salento. Promoted by Puglia Region in collaboration with Teatro Pubblico Pugliese and the International Association BJCEM.

University of Nottingham Museum will be a temporary home for some unique objects. Made by Lena Peters and unearthed in the woods of Northumberland National Park, just above Hadrian’s Wall. They tell a fascinating new story about archeology and our history. Join storyteller and ceramicist Lena Peters to find out more about these special and engaging objects.

Dizzy Ink is a risograph and screen printing studio. Using UKYA City Takeover as inspiration and stimuli, Made in a Day allows participants to create, design, print and bind a risograph zine within one day. All participants will get the opportunity to take a publication home.

Join artist Jenny Hibberd as she describes her relationship with lace and her journey to create an interactive lace piano to inspire and connect the people of Nottingham with the City’s cultural past.

Out of necessity artists must become their own business, finance, sales and marketing manager, researcher, curator and administrator; ultimately, the project manager of your career as an artist. This practical, discursive, and insightful talk will help new graduates and emerging artists begin to understand the practical and philosophical aspects of an art career and learn how they can navigate the difficult transition between education and making a career as an artist.
