Artist Talk - Between Forests and Oceans

  • The Florist, Upstairs at Bunkers Hill 38 Hockley England, NG1 1FP United Kingdom (map)

In conversation with artist Sarah Cunningham on her recent artist in residence in Guna Yala, Panama, the gateway between South and Central America, living with the first politically autonomous indigenous community, the Kunas.

Sarah will share stories of her time in Armila. She will be talking about how the Kuna community protects the nature and the ecosystems that surround them, focusing on their mythologies, ancient traditions, botanic knowledge and local ecologies and the profound impact that this residency has had on her practise. She will also be talking about the 1925 revolution that allowed this indigenous community to become the first politically autonomous region in Latin America.

At a time where our forests and waters are under such significant threat, this is an open invitation to connect and learn from these connections to nature that the Kuna people have carried for centuries, and in doing so to reflect on our own communities, habitats and ourselves.

Sarah would like to thank @lawayakacurrent and the Kuna community of Armilla for making this possible.
