Taking Place: Lincoln 2022/23
UK New Artists launched the first iteration of Taking Place in Lincoln in 2022. This year-long programme featured artist-led, community-focused projects developed in response to the city of Lincoln and its surrounding areas. In collaboration with local organisations, the programme offered a range of free performances, exhibitions, and talks, providing opportunities for the public to experience new work from emerging artists.
During the year-long Taking Place: Lincoln programme, two key events took place;
Welcome Launch of Taking Place: Lincoln in November 2022
Weekend Celebration of Creativity in October 2023
Members of the New Artist Collective #1 had the opportunity to choose from one of three residencies:
Architecture: UKNA and Lincolnshire Archives collaborated to create a research-based opportunity, where the New Artist Collective explored the online catalogue and resources.
Play: UKNA and Lincoln Arts Centre collaborated to provide an opportunity for artists to explore playful ways of bringing art into city spaces, allowing them to experiment with live happenings, sculptural interventions, and improvisation within the city walls.
Rurality: UKNA and SO Festival collaborated to offer a residency focused on Lincolnshire’s rural landscape, encouraging artists to use their senses to explore and respond to the environment. Throughout the residency, artists refined and shared new works, all inspired by the landscape, with the work-in-progress presented at SO Festival 2023 in Mablethorpe.
During these residencies, they worked together and developed new ideas for guided commissions. This collaborative process allowed the artists to exchange ideas, work on new projects, and explore the possibilities of a temporary artist collective. The guided commissions were presented at UKNA’s Weekend Celebration of Creativity.
