Charlie Birtles

Charlie makes to explore value and meaning of unsung objects to allow others to think. Her influences come from miscellanea; objects that exist in archives from past lives. She engages with everyday materials to form an honest response, making things with her own hands. Her construction processes are meticulous and repetitive allowing time to create organically. Charlie has exhibited in galleries and shows across the country, receiving accolades as ‘one to watch’; She was selected by the Crafts Council for their prestigious development programme ‘Hothouse’ and has since gone on to become part of UK Young Artists’ ‘Cultural Leadership Programme’.

Pineapple NCM1891-54

Pineapple NCM 1891-54 is specific to the intersection of Gregory Boulevard and Radford Road, influenced by a piece held with Nottingham City Museums and Galleries lace archive. The work is all about making connections to the site as it once existed and how it now exists. Historically the site has remained connected to Nottingham’s lace industry, now the site represents a vibrant community, a bustling intersection, with Sharf and Sons fruit market on the corner. The billboard artwork is an image of a 3-d piece, only 10cm in size, created by embroidering needle lace onto fruit nets.
