Hula Thunder-Clap
Hula Thunder-Clap (2016)
8mm film & 'Viking Thunder-Clap' sound
Performer - Cathryn Quail
The film describes a series of loops and potential loops; the female protagonist hoops in a circle around a space, the camera also spins on its axis, the single roll of film loops through the camera and the escalating football chant repeats itself. Although structured with these formal ideas, the loops are imperfect and manipulated, digital editing suggesting an endless recombination rather than a single ending. The unpredictability of the woman negotiating the space creates a sense of suspense and joy, whilst the hoop acts like a drawing tracing circles on the film.
