The Hermes Experiment

The Hermes Experiment is passionate about contemporary and experimental music and is dedicated to creating art that is innovative and unique. Capitalising on their deliberately idiosyncratic combination of instruments (soprano voice, clarinet, harp and double bass), the quartet performs diverse experimental compositions and arrangements, as well as venturing into live free improvisation, and in January they were named winners of the Nonclassical Battle of the Bands 2014. The ensemble seeks to promote and collaborate with composers and other artists ; during the 2015-16 season, the ensemble is working with nineteen composers, as well as embarking on exciting interdisciplinary collaboration.

PSYCHOLOGICAL TALES

‘Psychological tales’ is an exploration of psychological states through the ages using contemporary music. New works by Woolgar, Coleman and Scolding explore compelling mental narratives in texts dating from biblical times to the twenty-first century. They are interspersed with free improvisation based on graphic scores created especially for the ensemble. These graphic scores, projected during the performance, are used as springboards into different states of mind, from hysteria and fear through to love and calm.
