Music and Poetry Double Bill: Margomool - ‘misconceptions’ / Talya Stitcher - ‘A Body of Words’

  • The Y Theatre 7 East St, Leicester LE1 6EY (map)

margomool will have your head bopping and contemplating its place in the universe. The Leicester-born vocalist and producer lovingly crafts their music with an eclectic mix of musicians, influenced by the like of Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Esther Phillips, Fat Freddy’s Drop and 4hero.

Their debut audio-visual project ‘Strip It’ was screened at the London Independent Film Festival, finding fans in Jamz Supernova at BBC 1Xtra, Erica McKoy at Worldwide Fm and The Line of Best Fit. In 2021, margomool releases their self-produced project 'misconceptions'; a collection of 5 songs and 3 visual projects meditating on the many illusions we place on reality.

Driven by a love for live instrumentation, co-creation and storytelling, margomool actively explores the message behind their music across art forms, making spaces for their artistic community / audience to get together, get creative and get inspired.

Talya Stitcher’s ‘A Body of Words’ is a 25-minute spoken word set about our bodies and the commonplace connections we make as people. Though sometimes dealing with heavier topics, Talya’s work is relatable and light-hearted, aiming to make people feel closer to themselves and each other. These poems carry a softly political message about representations of body image and sexuality. Diving into dreams, examining boundaries and exploring cultural nourishment, these poems ask us all to consider those small everyday moments that may mean more to us than they do at first glance.

Talya is a cat-obsessed, challah-loving, pottery-attempting poet and photographer, whose work has been described as “warm and relatable, with an ability to vibrantly capture the small moments”. She produces Sounds Queer, the Sheffield-based variety night celebrating and platforming Yorkshire’s queer community.
