Priya Rupra - ‘History’ (Durational Performance)

  • Outdoors Humberstone Gate West Leicester, LE1 England (map)

'History' relies on the public’s interest, engagement and distribution. The artist writes in binary code to reflect the systems of education and narrative of history we are taught from a young age while demonstrating miscommunication and hidden information; it also nods to technological advances and access to information through one’s own desire to learn. The work explores a need to take responsibility for our own education and exploration of events, both historically and present. The viewer holds the power in deciding what they gain from this piece.

Priya Rupra’s practice is borne from a combination of her education, research and life experiences. Critical foundational, structural and psychological theory combined with a focus on diaspora, social hierarchy and cultural symbolisms navigate her contemporary fine art practice. Her work is often shaped by real life and politics of difference, specifically generational trauma, conflict and power relations. Her performance style recontextualises traditional South Asian ritual, ceremony and teachings in an often raw and unsettling manner. She aims to provoke the viewers exploration into difficult subject matters more deeply, sometimes relying on their participation for a work to hold value.
