Music and Poetry Showcase - Carly Brown; Jay Johnson, Meriem Jouti; Matt Smith

  • The Y Theatre Leicester, LE1 6EY (map)

Join us at The Y Theatre for a relaxed evening of live music and spoken word poetry from four of the UK’s best new artists.

Carly Brown’s spoken word poetry explores relationships and desire from a range of historical and modern perspectives. She uses her background in historical research and literary analysis to prod and delve into history and other works of art. This spoken word performance will feature poems from Carly’s new poetry pamphlet, Anastasia, Look in the Mirror, which explores love and desire from various vantage points: literary, historical, and personal. All of Carly’s work is infused with warmth and humor and underpinned by the belief that comedy can be a tool for communicating surprising truths and inspiring change.

Jay Johnson is an award-winning musician and songwriter who moved to London before his teenage years and began making music from a young age. Jay’s naturally curious mind led him to start learning the cello. He then taught himself how to play the guitar a few years after. Jay started listening to artists such as Bob Dylan, Paolo Nutini, and Ben Howard from his early teens, as a result, their influences can be seen in his original works. Jay’s most recent music features the styles of the early hiphop artists whom he was exposed to at an even younger age. Jay will perform live music, featuring a collection of new and old songs which have been written, produced and will be performed by Jay himself.

Meriem Jouti is a young Moroccan spoken word artist. Too shy to speak when she was younger, she was dependent on writing to express her emotions and to communicate with the world around her. Once she gained the confidence to speak up, she took the stage to finally voice her thoughts and share her feelings . Meriem’s spoken word poems cover a range of different topics: Race and the feeling of walking into a room of white people; sexism and its twisted history; mental health and how it doesn't mean anything to my parents; Meriem’s mother, who she loves more than she loves herself, and who knows just how to break me.

Matt Smith will be performing a number of original tracks that he has written with his acoustic guitar. Some of the songs have been around for yonks and some other songs aren't even finished at the time of writing this bio. But they all have a delicate and intricate sound. He would describe his music as melancholic, cathartic, and a bit confusing. It's probably this minor puzzlement that keeps him revisiting these songs. Matt's guitar playing is fun and an exciting style to watch. His songs are a place for contemplation. To him anyway. Maybe for others too.
