Dimitris Chimonas & Enacttheatre

Dimitris Chimonas' work evolves in the intersection of performance and theatre, exploring spectacle and context. He has presented works at the Benaki Museum commissioned by NEON Marina Abramovic Institute (Athens, 2016) and The Window Laboratoire (Paris, 2018) amongst others, and is currently a fellow at Ashkal Alwan, Beirut (2018-19). Enacttheatre is a devised-theatre duo founded by Marina Makris and Elena Kallinikou in 2014. Their work has toured extensively in Cyprus and Greece, gaining local audience and critical acclaim. In collaboration with Chimonas they participated at the BJCEM 18 Young Artists Biennale, and were part of the Cypriot Pavilion at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale 2018.

Date Time Location

One body of work consisting of 13 performances, in 13 different locations around sunset time. Three performers enter and exit a public space and engage in a non-scripted ritual of rhythmical clapping allowing a series of failures, successes and familiar rhythms to unravel. By deconstructing the folk music and dances of the Eastern Mediterranean and European region, the rhythms and vibrations become an accommodating platform for an essential meeting with the present moment and location. The aim of this work is to reach for a sense of collectiveness. Through the repetition, clapping grows to become a new kind of ritual, a reflection on our collective memory, a celebration of our meeting, a praise for our achievements, an encouragement for action. The openness and inviting nature of the piece allows it to transform every time it is shared, and consequently -depending on the public- a new performance is created each time.
