Tess Williams

Tess is a large scale abstract painter who is based in London. She is currently in her final year of the MA Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, having graduated from the BA Fine Art course at De Montfort University a couple of years ago.

Tess’ work exists within the boundaries of traditional painting, deconstructed painting and installation. By picking apart the traditional stretcher/canvas based method of painting she hopes to create something that engages with the space the work is placed in. Creating a dialogue between the install space and the work; the wall and the material. Both aesthetically and physically.

BACK AGAIN

'Back Again' is a site specific piece that Tess has created to be shown at Two Queens Gallery. This wall mounted painting installation explores the transformation and tug of war between the material, space and composition.

The large pieces of canvas have been through a transformational process where many layers of ink and acrylic paint have been added and then removed. Making the canvas feel worn and used.

When hung together these pieces create an almost awkward relationship with each other. Hanging and draping from the wall in a limbo like state, yet coming together to create a resolved form. From afar this painting seems bold and looming, but on closer inspection the material is very delicate, tactile and detailed.

The contrast of all these elements is what Tess hopes will provide the viewer with a visually stimulating and interesting aesthetic experience.
