Spoken Movement

Spoken Movement, led by Artistic Director, Kwame Asafo-Adjei, fuses both street dance and contemporary techniques to create their own vocabulary in movement. Spoken Movement, look to push boundaries by undertaking concepts, issues and day to day life experiences, creating thought-provoking pieces of work. The company recently performed their own sold-out show, “Obibini” for Sadlers Wells’ Wild Card series and have also won first place at Paris’ competition ‘Danse Elargie’. Kwame wants his work to allow the audience to reflect on culture and identity within their society because without you not knowing your culture, you have no identity.

Obibini

Obibini is a hip-hop theatre evening giving you a journey of self-reflection. It’s a multi cross art platform, using dance vocabulary, rooted in hip-hop. The evening opens up on cultural hierarchy, challenging society’s perspectives and how this affects and shapes our culture today. In an immersive evening, the audience will experience a historical relapse and the emergence of worlds where questions, domestic occurrences, humour and religions collide. Kwame has also collaborated with Animation, Beatboxing, and Music composers, in order to amplify his physical work, bringing an all rounded high-quality evening. Using Hip-Hop dance & African influences, Spoken Movement will allow their audiences to delve through a self-reflective journey, leaving them wanting more answers.
