Natasha Sabatini
Born 1989 UK, of Italian origins, the current work focuses on using vernacular photography as the source material to develop etchings and sculptural paintings that suggest fictional narratives. Graduated from an MFA in Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art in 2015, here she began working with the Marion Phillini group who make experimental video installations. She continues to organise a yearly art residency in her hometown of Atina in Italy with LUMEN a London based collective.

The pieces often begin with vernacular photographs, from personal albums of friends or family. They function as the source material, and act as a reminder of what I have experienced, yet forgotten, or failed to perceive in the moment. They are the testimony to the untold, tangled up in silence. Through repetition and erasure, playfully layering the image with paint, drawing, etching and coloured gels. I scratch, searching for the untold stories, hidden behind the surface, questioning the original photograph as document. Covering up to reveal, in the darkness I stumble forward mapping new territories of desire. In this process new imaginary landscapes are formed, at times completely obscuring the original image.
