Melissa Beardmore

Originally from Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire, Melissa Beardmore creates visual recollections in mixed media, using life events as inspiration for works in drawing and sculpture. Her life events inspire works that reveal candid detail, emotion and unresolved residue, and work toward the showcasing and strange celebration of the events and their happening.

Recent exhibitions include: Two Queens Members show, Leicester, UK (group show), LCB Depot, Leicester, UK (group show) and Palm Bay City Hall, Florida, USA (group show). Melissa graduated from Fine Art at De Montfort University, Leicester in 2018.

I didn't say that you could enter' proposes a repositioning and celebration of abstract shapes that have made themselves apparent in the aftermath of a personal traumatic event as the residue of crime, intrusion and trespass. The work addresses no solution or closure to the event that provides its inspiration and context, seeking only to work toward the showcasing of the forms and a strange celebration of the event taking place.

The geometric shape produced in plaster is reminiscent of the architecture and shape associated with safety and protection found in personal space. Steel intrudes. It wraps around the created form and hangs on. Like a leech.
The work invites comparison with constructivism and takes influence from Tracey Emin’s depictions of personal experience and El Lissitzky’s Beat the Whites with the Red Wedge (1919), a work of Russian propaganda featuring abstract geometric shape and colour.
