Lorenza Demata

Lorenza Demata is a visual artist and photographer whose practice is related to the analysis of relevant social issues. By combining different approaches of conceptual, portrait and documentary photography, she intends to question the role of the individuals and how identity is altered by globalization processes. She was born in Naples, Italy in 1988. Raised in Florence, she graduated in 2012 in International Cooperation and Conflict Management. She attended the Three Years Course in Photography at Fondazione Studio Marangoni in Florence until 2016. She is based in London, after she graduated (MA Photography, 2017) at London College of Communication.

It all started when some of us left the country

It is estimated that expatriates constitute approximately 40% of London population.
At the same time, almost 50% of the total consumption of food resources relies on the
importation of fruit and vegetables from other countries.
This photographic project is an investigation of the notion of identity in the contemporary
migratory context.
The displacement of human resources is explored through a visual analogy with imported fruit and vegetables. By creating this parallel relation between people and food commodities,
Lorenza aims to unveil the process of redefining individual identity that often takes place in the experience of expatriates.
The photographic series asks the viewer to critically reflect on the role of the human workforce in the political context of global migration.
