Jernej Čuček Gerbec
Jernej Čuček Gerbec is a media agnostic artist that approaches his work from a theoretical and conceptual angle. He started as a photographer completing his BA in photography at VIST in Ljubljana. From here he proceeded with his studies at Aalto University in Finland, obtaining an MA in Visual Culture and Contemporary Art with his thesis Aesthetics of the Everyday / Aesthetics of the Mundane. During both his studies he has been exhibiting both in group and solo exhibitions in Slovenia, Finland and USA.
During my time at Aalto University I have developed a big interest in opinion exchange and collaboration with fellow artist and learned to step outside the strict art sphere. Living among a very International group of students has thought me that everyone’s input can greatly impact your own work. I started cherishing the communities that are born from this intersections of different kinds of people. Having the opportunity to explore all sorts of spaces and mediums, allowed me to develop a sensibility to develop artworks that both express my ideas as well have the audacity to listen to the space and reflect the site, creating artworks that are meant for the time and space. I think the opportunity to connect with a new set of people coming from different backgrounds would be absolutely amazing. I have loved my time in Finland and I have loved to learn from my peers. I think a set of new minds would further allow me to grow, as well I hope that my own background and knowledge can be of any use in expanding others thinking processes.
