Benjamin Jones

Benjamin Jones (b. Reading) lives and works in Bristol. His work is informed by the ideas and technology that mediate our relationship to landscape and uses both traditional and experimental approaches to photography. Selected exhibitions include Thresholds (Gonzo Unit, Thessaloniki), EBC019 (East Bristol Contemporary, Bristol), Notes On Painting (The Koppel Project Hive, London), Is This Real Lyf (i.o.u.a.e. at Commercial Union House, Newcastle) and Grounds For Cautious Optimism (solo at Spike Island Test Space). He is a recipient of a GANE Trust award and was a Spike Island Fellow from 2016 - 17.

Replicas

These works move between constructed and documentary photographs. ‘Replicas’ are a series of large scale, highly detailed photographs of models constructed in the studio. They are greatly enlarged from the models and imply a barren or lunar landscape vast in scale but also referencing the way in which photography detaches us from a subject, how the photographic object can become autonomous. Alongside these are integrated documentary images ambiguous in terms of location and context but opening a dialogue with the abstractions as to how we traverse and manipulate landscape. Technology mediates our experience of landscape, whether as transport or through image reproduction. This is a central theme to both of these works and the overall installation creates an open point of reflection for the viewer, prompting them to project their own experiences.
