Amelia Seren Roberts

Born in South Wales, Amelia Seren Roberts is a writer and visual artist based in Nottingham whose practice questions the homogenisation and commodification of folk culture. Since graduating from Loughborough University and Cardiff School of Art and Design, Amelia was a selected member of the Welsh Millennium Centre Creative Hub and has exhibited both nationally and abroad. Winner of the Two Queens Graduate Award, Amelia is currently developing her practice alongside the ExperiMentor programme at New Art Exchange. Amelia is co-founder of KÜHLE WAMPE collective and is a studio holder and Arts Writer in Residence at Backlit Gallery. @ameliaserenroberts

Working primarily across textiles and installation, Amelia Seren Roberts employs traditional Welsh quilting techniques, calling attention to contemporary re-presentations of traditional Welsh folk narratives through Anglo-American popular culture. Roberts unpicks threads of Welsh folkloric lineage in, American author, Lloyd Alexander’s ‘The Chronicles of Prydain’ [1964-68], and subsequently Disney’s [1985] failed animated movie, ‘The Black Cauldron’ as a starting point to pose questions about the bastardisation of area-specific folk culture. Grounded in Welsh folklore, the Chronicles re-genre aspects of ‘The Mabinogion’, Welsh Medieval literature, which are in turn adapted from Welsh oral storytelling traditions. Parallel to this reworking, Roberts presents the Welsh Quilt as both traditional craft object and artwork embodying questions of cultural sustainability, authenticity and Anglo/American-cultural assimilation.
