Abigail Johnson

Abigail Johnson is a ceramicist who creates slip cast vessels that encourage engagement with the viewer. Johnson is inspired by the crisp, angular elements in architecture which she has developed, using 3D rendering programmes, into a collection of porcelain forms. The forms are complimented by a stripe of textural glaze which creates an exciting contrast with the porcelain’s natural softness. After taking inspiration from Nottingham city, the artist has explored ways in which size effects the presence of the ceramics. Johnson has graduated from Decorative Arts, and her work has been featured at Nottingham Trent’s Degree Show 2018.

Containing Craters: Part One

The collection of porcelain slip cast ceramics is inspired by the angles and linear aspects found in the architecture around Nottingham. The project concentrates on the method of making which includes; turning plaster, making plaster molds, casting the forms and creating an engaging surface. The design plays with the notion of taming something unpredictable. The form allows the artist to place the glaze in a controlled area to present order in the collection. The pieces have been decorated with a glaze which bubbles and cracks in the kiln to produce a surface that is proven to be irresistible to touch.
