Placement and displacement: Korea 2017 - Meet The Artists
UKYA is delighted to announce a new arts partnership South Korea with Seojung Art Centre and Superior Gallery, Seoul and Chung Ang University. Selected through a national open call, 13 of the best young artists in the UK will travel to Seoul in October 2017 to present their work alongside 10 young Korean artists. During their time in South Korea the artists will participate in collaborative
workshops, talks and visits to local cultural events, facilitating intercultural exchange and international collaboration. Artists work will be presented at the National Assembly of Korea, Seoul, in partnership with Seojung Art Centre and at other exciting locations.
Alongside Placement and Displacement, UKYA alumni and ambassador Matthew John Atkinson will be presenting a solo exhibition of new paintings at Superior Gallery, Seoul. This exhibition comes as a result of an R&D trip that Matthew took with UKYA to South Korea in 2016, supported by the Arts Council and British Council through the Artist International Development Fund.
We were overwhelmed by the response to the call out, receiving over 150 applications from talented artists across the UK. The selected artists represent a range of art forms and their work displays outstanding quality and originality. We are delighted to be showcasing their work in South Korea and are proud to announce the chosen artists below.
ALAN BAKER
Alan Baker is an artist based in Shropshire who specialises in drawing and sculpture.
Having completed a MA in fine art at Manchester Metropolitan University in 2013 and a BA (hons) degree from the University of Huddersfield in 2012, he is now continuing his artistic practice at his studio based in the North West. He has exhibited his artwork across the country, most recently in the Strange Lands exhibition in London and he was shortlisted for the Greater Manchester Art prize 2016. He also won the the GreatArt award at the Nottingham Castle Open Exhibition in 2014.

CARA NAHAUL
Born in London, Cara Nahaul received her MFA in Fine Arts at Parsons The New School for Design and was a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship. In 2010, she was selected for the John Moores Painting Prize for the Liverpool Biennial. She was also selected for the inaugural Jerwood Painting Fellowships in 2011. Nahaul completed a yearlong residency at the Florence Trust in 2015, followed
by a solo exhibition at Christine Park Gallery, London. She was nominated for the Dentons Art Prize in 2016 and presented a solo booth of works at Start Art Fair, Saatchi Gallery.

IRINA RAZUMOVSKAYA
Irina Razumovskaya was born in 1990 in Leningrad, USSR. Being entranced by art at the age of five, when she entered the Kustodiev Art School, her journey towards her art practice has not stopped ever since. Throughout her school and university years, Irina participated in Art History lecture program in the Hermitage Museum, which served to strengthen her fascination with the fine art, archaeology and ceramics. Irina graduated from the St Petersburg Classical Gymnasium, where she studied ancient languages and literature, and refined her interest in culture of the present and that of the distant past.

LENA PETERS
Graduating from Central St Martins, Lena Peters is a London-based storyteller whose Sheffield upbringing nurtured her passion for history and nature. These elements combined with her interest in folklore and mythology mean that her work dances between the real and the unreal, creating illustrative objects which work to embody a narrative.
Lena was the winner of the New Designers UK Young Artists Associate Prize 2017, with her work being selected from hundreds of artists.

MATT GREENWOOD
Matt Greenwood was born Lincolnshire, England in 1991. After working as Photography Technician for three years, Matt began studying BA Hons Photography at Falmouth University, Cornwall, where he has recently graduated in 2017 with a First-Class Honors. His work has been exhibited throughout various galleries across the UK, including London and Falmouth. Matt has also assisted various artists across the UK, including interning as a Studio Assistant for Nadav Kander and has recently gained a job as a Photographer for Tate Galleries.

RUTH SMITH
Ruth Smith, is an 18 year old girl born in the outskirts of London. Ruth's personality has always been quite introverted and this has helped develop her nature where she tends to observe the outside world, aesthetically appreciating it. At a younger age toys where role play was essential were her favourite, and from it she learned how to make stories. Before these past three years, peer pressure and insecurity has affected how Ruth has expressed herself, and even since leaving college (with an understanding of the basics of media) her love of film along with her imagination has grown immensely. A completley self taught artist, her minimalistic style draws upon the beauty
of the people, sounds, nature without excessive film equipment needed.

TOBY CAMPION
Described by BBC Sunday Politics as "the voice of a generation", Toby Campion's unapologetic words and wit have inspired audiences from Glastonbury to the Royal Albert Hall. An award winning playwright and poet, Toby performs his poetry across the country and has been featured on national networks including BBC1, BBC Radio 4 and E4. UK representative at a number of international poetry tournaments and projects, including Capturing Fire and The Next Generation Speaks, Toby produces the UK National University Poetry Slam & Summit and co-runs Midlands poetry night, Find the Right Words, as well as facilitating writing workshops across a range of settings.
Toby Campion is an Artist Ambassador for UKYA, meaning that in addition to presenting his work in South Korea, Toby will work with us to connect with artists and creative organisations in South Korea, whilst supporting the UK artists during their time there.

ANNA MANFIELD
Anna Manfield has created a range of sculptural wooden blocks that encourage play and creativity in both adults and children. The user is encouraged to participate in the creation of the work through the activity of ‘expressive play’, making their own sculptural compositions. Graduating from Nottingham Trent University in 2017, Anna has developed her skills in wood turning to produce beautiful objects, combining art and traditional craft.

CONOR ROGERS
Conor graduated from Sheffield Hallam University 2014 and one of his degree pieces was selected for the John Moores Painting Prize. In 2015 he was selected for the Bloomberg New Contemporaries which toured from Nottingham to London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts. In 2016 he exhibited in a touring exhibition ‘Utopia Deferred’ in Hull and Liverpool and he was then selected to take part in UKYA national Festival in Derby. Most recently he was shortlisted to represent the UKYA at the Mediterranea18 Biennale in Albania and has since been shortlisted for the Ruskin Art Prize 2017.

JASON MABANA
Jason Mabana studied at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance and furthered his training at the London Contemporary Dance School. Jason worked for companies such as Candoco Dance Company, Wayne McGregor, Akram Khan and Shobana Jeyasingh. He choreographed for the BBC Young Dancer and recently crated 'Requiem For Aleppo' that premiered at Sadlers Wells. Jason is in the process of making two new works 'Between Us' and 'Mama'

LIAM FALLON
Liam Fallon was born in 1995 in Stoke on Trent and lives and works in Manchester. His recent exhibitions include ‘COLACE’, Grosvenor Building, Manchester, ‘Exchange Rates’, Bushwick, New York, ‘Bought Objects’, Voidoid Archive, Glasgow and ‘Queering Minimalism: You’re reading into it’, Vane Gallery, Newcastle. He graduated from Manchester School of Art in 2017, winning second place in the Woon Foundation Prize 2017, and has undertaken a residency with The White Pube, art criticism website.

MEGAN VISSER
Megan Visser (b. 1995), is a multi-disciplinary artist working across video, sculpture, installation and painting, living and working in London. And recently graduated from UAL Wimbledon College of Arts and received a BA in Fine Art: Painting.

My art practice encompasses drawing and mark making. Exploring the medium and creating works with subject matter that reflects the style and process in which I draw. Resulting in works in complex and intricate drawings of architecture and other grand manmade structures.
