Blank Space: DERBY
UKNA People, Place and Practice: Derby 2024 | Riverlights Exhibition by New Artist Collective #2 and University of Derby Students
UK New Artists is introducing Blank Space, a new grassroots initiative dedicated to supporting, showcasing, and empowering creative talent in Derby.
We are seeking Derby-based artists, creatives, makers, and performers who are passionate about driving change in the city. Our vision for Blank Space is to establish a dynamic, artist-led, multi-purpose space in the heart of Derby, brought to life through a vibrant public programme that celebrates local talent and enriches the cultural landscape.
Blank Space will offer studio spaces for local creatives, new graduates and emerging artists, providing an environment for experimentation, growth, and collaboration. Through skills development, networking opportunities, increased visibility, and professional support, this initiative aims to equip artists with the tools they need to thrive.
In the coming months, your voices will play a crucial role in shaping this project. UK New Artists is here to facilitate, not dictate - because ultimately, Derby knows best what Derby needs.
Why?
During UKNA’s Weekend Celebration of Creativity 2024, we hosted the Navigating the Present, Shaping the Future Symposium - a discussion exploring how to support and sustain emerging artists, with a particular focus on Derby.
Through these conversations, we identified a significant gap in grassroots activity within the city, as well as the need for a dedicated, experimental space where artists can create, collaborate, and grow.
From this, Blank Space was born - a new initiative designed to fill this gap.
How do I get involved?
If you are interested in getting involved, please reach out to UKNA Creative Producer and Blank Space lead, Tom Cansdale at tom@uknewartists.co.uk
We are currently working towards announcing the first meeting in the programme which is expected to be in May 2025 (TBC): a visioning session to start building ideas.
The project is made possible with support from Derby City Council.
