A Little Bit of Rebellion is a Good Thing: UKNA at Nottingham Light Night 2022
A Little Bit of Rebellion is a Good Thing is a digital installation created by UK New Artists in collaboration with five Nottingham-based artists for Nottingham City Council’s Light Night 2022.
Together we will share stories of everyday rebellion with the people of Nottingham over the two nights of Light Night 2022 (Fri 4th and Sat 5th Feb). UKNA have collected short stories of everyday rebellion from five artists - Aja Ireland, Benjamin Rostance, Ryan Boultbee, Sara Mahmood and Wingshan Smith - which will be displayed on the digital display screens at Tunnel Vision for audiences to enjoy as they explore the city.
Stories will be displayed on the two evenings of Light Night, plus the days leading up to the festival. Audiences are able to read the stories as they make their way through the Tunnel, and are encouraged to contribute their own stories using #alittlebitofrebellion
Rebellion is built into the fibre of our city. The castle tells stories of protests, revolts, rise-ups and revolutions. To be an artist is to rebel against the status quo; to envision the world differently; to explore the “why” and the “what could be” of events large and small, past, present and future. But not all rebellion is ground-breaking. Sometimes it’s just a healthy disregard for the rules, or for what is expected. Even the most compliant of us rebel from time to time, and what a boring world we’d live in if we didn’t. Rebellion can be small, but so, so vital. By collecting and sharing creative stories of everyday rebellion we want to provide a positive, accessible and fun introduction for audiences to the work of five new Nottingham artists; presenting ideas in a familiar (but different!) way. Celebrating shared experiences and inspiring members of the public to explore their own rebellious sides.
