New Collectives
This year’s themes are Occupation and Absence.
New Collectives 2019 has a core vision to support the new wave of artist-led initiatives, and is the first ever ‘Fringe’ event to run alongside UK Young Artists’ City Takeover. The core aim of this project is to provide an essential opportunity for collaborative working and for student-led activity to thrive within the East Midlands region. New Collectives 2019 provides a platform for regional collaboration and an opportunity for students to work with others from different universities. We have invited newly formed and existing collectives* from UKYA’s three partner universities (De Montfort, Lincoln and Nottingham Trent) to propose an innovative, bold and experimental project to be realised at the City Takeover. These projects take the form of performances; exhibitions; lectures; public interventions; and cross-art form happenings in the public sphere.
New Collectives is produced by Jade Foster, UKYA’s Emerging Producer
*Tate Definition: Loosely defined, an art collective is a group of artists working together to achieve a common objective.
MK Movement Company
MK Movement Company is co-founded by Zhané Mckenzie and Moriom Karim whilst studying BA (Hons) Performing Arts at De Montfort University, Leicester.
“MK Movement Company is an up-and-coming interdisciplinary performance company, based in Leicester. We are two female performers, investigating gender and the influence of heritage on our identities. Our work is contemporary, intimate, participatory and immersive, raising questions rather than giving answers. We are not trying to change the world; we are pushing at the doors to reveal what’s kept locked behind.”
Segment
Segment are a group of four third year fine art students at Nottingham Trent University. Segment’s members are Ellen Wheatley, Harry Freestone, Jasmine Brown and Tarah Dean. Their practices entail; moving image, sound, installation and performance. Their contexts pull from a keen interest in social politics, the infra-structure that builds up the institutions that they have experienced and the history of society’s conformance to general consensus. This combined work is set aside from their individual practices however, together they find common ground by shedding light on the everyday and reflecting upon experiences which are more poignant or sobering. As a collective they ask the audience to question themselves and their surroundings. They aim to form a new sense of awareness in their audience through an interactive experience with sensory elements.
XYZ.α
XYZ.α is a 12 member collective spanning across all three years on BA (Hons) Fine Art at the University of Lincoln. The collective consists of members Chloe Hallberg, Dominica Mars, Eleanor Ball, Emma Brice, Emma Chippendale, Fran Healands, Kate Spink, Lauren Smith, Madara Vimba, Niamh Rooney, Rhianne Bellis and Sophie Baker.
“XYZ.α, formed over communal ground that was intrinsically different to all, but placed each member on the same platform- that was being and identifying as a woman in the 21st century. As a collective we do not want to preach or force opinions onto our audiences, we wish to state and bring to light, mass and delicate views of womanhood. The term womanhood is important to us, we do not want to exclude anyone based on age, gender, race or ethnicity from our inquisition. “
