Outdoors, across the City
As you explore Leicester, keep your eyes peeled for site-specific mini artworks by Kirsty Kerr, and large scale photographs by Mustafa Boga. Locations to be announced soon!
Kirsty Kerr’s ‘Life Coming Soon’ aims to subvert feelings of despair - in a year of global pandemic, climate emergency, division and inequality. Kirsty started placing tiny ‘construction signs’ around her neighbourhood, signposting life and growth in unlikely places. In some ways, they became mini protest placards, like the earth itself calling out for change. And in other ways, they announce change is coming, or perhaps already happening, in ways unseen and unexpected.
For the City Takeover, Kirsty will be exploring Leicester for urban nature and placing new signs of resistance and hope, as we move from Winter into Spring.
Mustafa Boga’s Extraneous Objects is a series of photographs showing people from Adana looking at objects which have been placed on a plinth.
Since leaving St Martins, Boga has thought a lot about the role of contemporary art in different societies and cultures. These concerns come to the foreground when he goes back to his hometown in Turkey. Boga finds it difficult to tell his family about what he does in London. The contemporary issues he explores seem less relevant to their lives and it’s difficult for them to relate to the work he produces.
