Poetry and music from some of the UK’s most exciting emerging writers; Roundhouse resident artist, Katie Gill; UniSlam finalists, Ife Grillo and Courtney Conrad; and Nottingham-based confessional rapper, Jordon the Ego.

Katie Gill is a London based spoken word artist from Portsmouth. She believes that approaching stigmatized issues with a sense of humour is a great way to break down barriers and enable wider conversations. Her poetry is often confessional, tackling topics such as alcoholism, body image and mental health. It has been described as ‘disarming’ and ‘down to earth.’

Ife Grillo is a 20-year-old poet who grew up in East London. He uses his poetry to examine the beauty, complexity and bitterness of everyday life while being refreshingly relatable. While he describes himself as a “poet first”, he also sings, dances and acts. As an active debater and activist, Ife won the 2016 World School Debating Championships while representing Team England and is the former Vice-Chair of the British Youth Council.

Courtney Conrad is a 22-year-old poet born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, who moved to Buckinghamshire, England at the age of 15. She is a CUPSI alum 2018, and Roundhouse Poetry Slam Runner-Up 2018. She uses personal narratives to discuss the politics of race, gender, class and immigration, whilst simultaneously allowing her feelings to go skinny dipping offering very vulnerable and raw personal experiences on love, heartbreak and self-love.

Jordon the Ego moved from Doncaster to Nottingham last year. Conscious, confessional rapper who animates and paints vivid descriptions of his life struggles, bringing honesty to the forefront of his performances. A stones throw away from poetry, his fluid lyrics make the hardest of his life adversities, easy for the ears to digest. Not to be overlooked.
