UKYA Poetry Jam #1

  • The Orange Tree 38 Shakespeare St England, NG1 4FQ United Kingdom (map)

Solo and group poems from UKYA’s UniSlam prize winners, Kent Poetry Team, followed by music from Grace Tower and poetry from Chifa Khelfaoui.

Kent Poetry Team
Winners of UKYA Prize at UniSlam 2018 representing the University of Kent. The team composes of Katrine Lynn Solvaag, Calum Collins. Steven Humber, Alice Gretton and Ameera-Aftabi Razak (aka. Malanghi Arts). With each their own quirky approach to performance poetry, heartfelt poems about loss and displacement to humorous pieces tackling first love, repetitive traits of spoken word poetry and an inability to grow a beard, together the team represents the best of the current Canterbury poetry scene.

Grace Tower
Grace is a musician. Over the past seven years, her professional singing career has taken off at local festivals and events. Her classical interests traversed into folk when she taught herself the guitar and began song-writing last year. She depicts in her unpublished album the adjustment from her home-place in Derbyshire to life in Ireland and beyond as an adult. The songs are fuelled with her tough soul, a toughness from sensitivity, and resonate with those battling grief. Grace studies English with Creative Writing at Queen’s University Belfast where the city’s spoken word and live music scene incite her compositions.

Chifa Khelfaoui
Chifa Khelfaoui is a spoken word artist from North London She aims to express opinions about important topics (such as oppressed women and mental health) that aren’t taken very seriously in a creative way that will raise awareness as well as allow people to be engaged in it, especially when it comes to young people.
