Call Out for Lincolnshire Artists: Celebrating Talent with The MashUP x UKNA

UK New Artists (UKNA) has partnered with The MashUP to provide Lincoln/shire based artists with an opportunity to share and exhibit work at the UKNA ‘Weekend Celebration of Creativity’ event from October 19th - 22nd 2023.

The Autumn brings to close a year long UKNA ‘Taking Place’ programme of artist residencies, workshops, commissions and showcases 17 artists from across Lincoln City and UK. Together The MashUP x UK New Artists want to continue to celebrate the wonderful contemporary visual arts being made in Lincoln/shire. Therefore we are seeking up to 10 Lincoln/shire based visual artists to join us at the unique event. 

This is an opportunity to meet and exhibit alongside other artists, collaborate, and network with peers from across the city and UK.  The weekend will be an opportunity to enjoy a host of newly commissioned works by 17 artists and our Creative Citizens programme, attend the opening event and participate in a day of exclusive talks and workshops by leading arts professionals and artists. Shortlisted artists will receive: 

  • £100 participation fee 

  • Invitation to exclusive events during the celebration event

  • Opportunity to showcase your work as part of 3-day event 

  • Opportunity to meet and have your work curated by Jazz Swali

  • Become part of the UKNA Alumni list and gain access to national opportunities 

  • All shipping and install & de-install costs will be covered

  • Marketing and promotional support from UKNA and The MashUP

  • Documentation of the show and individual work 

We’re looking for artists who work in the following fields: 

Applied arts: ceramics, glass, textiles, jewellery

Digital Arts: moving image, performance video, technological arts

Fine Arts: painting, printmaking, photography, installation, sculpture


Eligibility

To be eligible for the award, you must be an artist based in Lincoln/shire aged 18 or over, and within the first 10 years of your professional practice, and have the right to live, work or study in the UK.

For those who are working in performance, you can apply for ‘Demo’ at Lincoln Arts Centre. 

Demo is your chance to test your artistic ideas in front of an audience at Lincoln Arts Centre. The event will offer a selection of new work from the most exciting artists both regionally & nationally, this event encourages critical discourse in a relaxed and supportive environment. The MashUP is a dedicated platform for providing opportunities for Lincoln/shire artists. They connect with local creatives and venues to deliver a rich programme of workshops, talks, networking events and showcase nights. In Spring 2023, The MashUP hosted 'The High Street Happening,' a dynamic event that celebrated the creative talent present in Lincolnshire, and provided a platform for 16 artists to showcase their work in the heart of Lincoln.

We run a range of developmental platforms for artists which include our micro-residencies which have given over 100 artists a stimulating space to reconnect with their work & learn new skills. UKNA also runs the Robert Walters Group UK New Artist of the Year award at the Saatchi Gallery and has delivered high profile combined arts events internationally.  UK New Artists is a national registered charity.

 

 

Jazz Swali is a contemporary art curator. He is currently the assistant curator of exhibitions at Backlit Gallery (Nottingham) – an lgbtq+ and female-led visual arts organisation, and he is an advisory board member of Eastside Projects Gallery (Birmingham) – an artist-run non-profit. His work with contemporary art, museums and galleries is embedded with curatorial activism, cultural and equality strategy, socio-political focuses, and alternative queer and experimental practices. 

 His recent exhibitions as a curator include Joy of Destruction (2023) and, in reality, these things need to be said (2021). Working with artists such as Rebecca Allen, Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley, Robert Yang, De’Anne Crooks, Kim Thompson, and Rene Matić. Swali has developed projects such as the Outcome Programme with Backlit Gallery, Nottingham Trent University, and the University of Nottingham (2021-2024). He joined the Emerging Curators Group programme with the British Art Network, Tate, and Paul Mellon Centre in 2023 and has recently been awarded two Arts Council England project grants for independent curatorial programmes (2020-2023). He graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a BA (Hons) in photography and will graduate with an MA in museum and gallery studies at the University of Leicester in 2024.
